Historic Property Tax Deferral

Properties designated as historic properties may be eligible for property tax deferrals. Application filing period is Jan. 1 - 31.

Properties designated as local historic landmarks may be eligible for property tax deferrals.

To qualify you must submit a deferment application, along with a copy of the local ordinance granting historic landmark status, to the Mecklenburg County Assessor's Office. If you are uncertain whether your property has been designated as a historic landmark, or if you're interested in learning more about your property's potential eligibility for historic landmark designation, contact the Mecklenburg County Historic Landmarks Department.

Elements qualifying for historical landmark designation will be eligible for city and county tax deferment of up to 50% of the taxable assessed value.

If a property loses its status as a designated historical landmark, taxes shall be computed as if the property had not been classified for that year, and taxes for the preceding three deferred fiscal years shall be payable immediately with interest as indicated in G.S. 105-360 for unpaid taxes.
