Tax Relief Programs

North Carolina offers several property tax relief programs for residents and businesses. Each program listed below provides an overview and includes the application with specific requirements.

Some programs have income requirements that must be met in order to qualify. Income means all monies received from every source other than gifts or inheritances received from a spouse, lineal ancestor, or lineal descendant.

Elderly or Disabled Homestead Exemption
Property tax exclusions are available for qualifying elderly and disabled residents.
Elderly or Disabled Property Tax Deferral (Circuit Breaker)
The Circuit Breaker program allows qualifying individuals the option to defer a portion of the property taxes owed on their permanent residence.
Disabled Veteran Homestead Exclusion
North Carolina excludes from property taxes the first $45,000 of assessed value for specific real property occupied as a permanent residence by a qualifying owner.
Present-Use Value Assessment
Commercial producers of agricultural, horticultural or forest products are eligible to apply for tax assessment on the basis of present use, rather than full market value.
Builder Property Tax Exemptions
Property tax exemptions are available for qualifying residential and commercial builders.
Historic Property Deferral
Properties designated as historic properties may be eligible for property tax deferrals.

General Exemptions and Exclusions for Real and Personal Property
You may be entitled to a tax exemption or exclusion if your real property or business personal property meets certain criteria.
